Eighteen years beside the ghats

A family kitchen, a coastal name, and one promise kept since 2006: everything we cook is pure vegetarian.

Where the road to Subrahmanya meets a good meal

Samudra sits in Balthila, Dasakodi, in the green heart of Dakshina Kannada. Pilgrims heading to Kukke Subrahmanya, families on Sunday outings, lorry drivers on long hauls: for eighteen years they have all pulled over for the same reason. Hot food, honest portions, and filter coffee that tastes like it should.

The name means "ocean" in Kannada and Sanskrit. It is a nod to our coast, and to the size of our menu. Udupi-style tiffin in the morning, unlimited-style meals at lunch, chaats and Indo-Chinese in the evening, and tandoori breads with rich Punjabi gravies for dinner.

A day at Samudra

Morning Steam rises off idlis and thatte idli. Goli baje for the brave, kashaya for the wise.
Noon South Deluxe and North Deluxe meals, with payasa to finish. The hall fills fast.
Evening Panipuri, masalapuri and gobi manchurian as the buses roll in from Subrahmanya.
Night Butter naans out of the tandoor, kadais bubbling, dum biriyani under its lid.
